Hébert: Another perplexing move from the Liberals

Chantal Hébert, The Toronto Star | Full Story | Predictably, the reaction to Michael Ignatieff’s bid to have Michaëlle Jean’s term extended was massively negative. A number of commentators described it as a kiss of death to the outgoing governor general and some of Jean’s biggest fans were rattled to see her turned into a Liberal pawn.

Many found Ignatieff’s apparent willingness to turn the selection of the next governor general into a partisan exercise unseemly.

It does not help that at the time when he was in opposition, Harper resisted the same temptation. When rumours that Jean was sovereignist sympathizer surfaced mere days after her appointment, Harper turned down calls from within his own inner circle to press for the nomination to be rescinded.

The perplexing Liberal approach to the issue of the governor general is only the latest in a string of questionable moves. >>
