Elevators of ‘shame’
Andrew Garib, METRO New York Link PDF Manhattan. Residents at an apartment building in Harlem know the six-story building’s elevator can open its doors — even when the elevator’s moving.
The building at 4441 Broadway is among the worst offenders — with 41 complaints and 34 violations — listed in the Department of Building’s new safety campaign, where the department publishes the 10 worst elevator safety violators in the city on its Web site, adding pressure to bring them up to code.
The new Elevator Enforcement Program is “a shame campaign” to draw attention to the worst buildings, Department of Buildings Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster said. The program proposes fines of up to $25,000 and charging $1000 a day until the problems are fixed.
