A $10 MINIMUM WAGE IS A MORAL IMPERATIVE

The Toronto Star | Full Story | In suggesting 66,000 jobs would be lost if Ontario raised the minimum wage to $10 an hour, Finance Minister Greg Sorbara was clearly using scare tactics last week in his attempt to defend his government’s policy of allowing only tiny increases in the base pay.

“A large jump in the minimum wage would have a significant negative impact on employment. The prospect of 66,000 jobs could be at risk,” Sorbara said last week in the face of growing demands for a $10 an hour minimum wage.

On Thursday, Ontario’s minimum wage will rise by 25 cents to $8 an hour.

Both the ruling Liberals and the opposition Conservatives have consistently argued that raising the minimum wage will result in steep job losses.

However, their arguments are based on questionable assumptions. At the same time, they avoid the real issue of whether full-time workers should be living in poverty in a province as rich as Ontario. >>
